Charente Maritime

Charente Maritime is part of the region Poitou– Charente. It is situated in Southwest France and almost covers the area between the Loire and the Gironde Rivers. There are four departments in the region, Charente, Deux Sevres, Vienne and Charente Maritime.

Charente Maritime is a fascinating historical and maritime area, with many magnificent fortifications from the battles against the English, the most famous of these being Fort Boyard which features in many present day TV shows. There are many roman sites some of which are still being excavated, such as FA at Talmont or the magnificent Amphitheatre in Saintes.

The coastal areas have spectacular beaches, the oyster beds of Marennes-Oleron, romantic islands (large and small), superb sailing

facilities, many wonderful restaurants, surfing of all kinds (wind surfing, kite-surfing and just plain old waves) lots of activities for children and adults alike.

There are  many major exhibitions and shows between early June and the end of September— Un Violon sur Le Sable in Royan, Grand Pavois Boat show in La Rochelle, The International Fireworks Competition in Saint Palais. There are just too many to mention. In our little corner alone (Pays Royannais) we have over 6000 events in the four month summer period, more than enough for anyone to find something they will enjoy.
